Welcome to 664 Volunteer Gliding Squadron online
664 VGS operates two Grob Vigilant T1 aircraft, serving the Northern Ireland Wing of the Air Training Corps and the RAF sections of the Combined Cadet Force in the province. From time to time we also provide limited flying opportunities for cadets from the rest of the UK and beyond.
Our aircraft are owned and maintained by the Royal Air Force. Our squadron staff consists of RAFVR(T)officers, civilian gliding instructors and flight staff cadets. Most of our instructors started their flying careers as cadets in the ATC or CCF and then underwent considerable further training, before eventually gaining their instructional qualifications.
We are normally permitted only to fly members of the CCF and ATC. The CCF units (and also some ATC squadrons) are established in a number of the province’s schools, but most ATC squadrons are town-based and are open to anyone between the ages of 13 and 18.
